Over 75 Years of Helpful, Professional, and Honest Service

MagicPak Replacement, Installation & Repair

Condos and apartments from Rockford to Grand Rapids often rely on a MagicPak: an all-in-one, through-the-wall unit that packs the furnace, air conditioner and blower into one cabinet in an exterior closet. It breathes through a louver in the outside wall, and it usually lasts 15 to 20 years. When yours reaches that age, our team replaces and installs a new unit that fits the opening you already have. We also repair the ones that still have years left.

MagicPak Replacement in Rockford and Kent County

A through-the-wall replacement has to work inside limits the building set decades ago. The new cabinet must slide into the existing wall sleeve, line up with the exterior louver, tie into the ductwork already in place and run on the gas or electric service the old unit used. MagicPak’s V-Series keeps the original cabinet dimensions, so it drops into most existing openings. The M-Series pairs with a smaller louver that some associations prefer on the outside of the building.

Replacement usually makes more sense than another repair when you notice these signs:

Your unit has passed its 15th birthday and the service calls are coming closer together.
The compressor is gone, or an older unit keeps losing refrigerant on the cooling side.
A technician finds a cracked heat exchanger on a gas unit, which can leak carbon monoxide and is never safe to patch.
The data plate shows R-22, a refrigerant no longer produced in the United States.
Your utility bills rise every season while the rooms stay less comfortable.

Gas, All-Electric or Heat Pump: Matching the Right All-in-One Unit

The building almost always points to the correct configuration, and we start there.

Gas heat with electric cooling:
This setup is the standard in buildings with natural gas, and current gas models reach up to 95% AFUE.
All-electric:
Electric resistance heat paired with air conditioning serves buildings that never had gas run to each unit.
Heat pump:
One refrigerant system handles heating and cooling, with 3 to 10 kW of electric backup heat for January nights in West Michigan.

Every replacement starts with a free estimate on HVAC replacement, so you see the full scope in writing before you commit. Ask us about payment plans for installations and repairs when you schedule.

MagicPak Repair When Replacement Can Wait

A younger unit with one failed part often deserves a repair. The usual causes are a blower motor or capacitor, an igniter or flame sensor on a gas model, a burned heat element on an electric model, a control board, or a plugged condensate drain. Our technician reads the model and serial number off the data plate, tracks down the failed component and explains the repair before work begins. When cooling is the problem, our air conditioning page covers what a service visit includes.

If the unit is older, we put the repair option and the replacement option in front of you together so the choice is yours. All work is warrantied, and the terms are listed on our warranty information page.

Keeping a New MagicPak in Good Shape

One visit a year keeps a new unit on track: a heat exchanger inspection on gas models, a coil cleaning, a drain flush and a clear exterior louver. A furnace tune-up covers the heating side, and members of our Home Care Club get priority scheduling, a free annual full HVAC service health check and no dispatch fee. Owners who want cleaner air in a closed-up condo can add filtration through our air quality services.

MagicPac FAQs

What is a MagicPak unit?

MagicPak is a line of all-in-one, through-the-wall heating and cooling units built by Allied Air Enterprises, a Lennox International company. The heat source, air conditioner and blower share one vertical cabinet that breathes through an exterior louver, so every condo or apartment gets its own system with no rooftop unit or outdoor condenser.

Is a MagicPak the same as a packaged HVAC unit?

It is a type of packaged HVAC unit with one big difference. Most packaged units sit outdoors on a concrete pad or a roof and push air into the home through ducts. A MagicPak lives inside, in a closet on an exterior wall, and pulls air through a louver. That is why a replacement has to match the wall sleeve instead of a pad or roof curb.

How many years will a MagicPak last?

Expect 15 to 20 years. Yearly maintenance, regular filter changes and a louver kept free of leaves and snow help a unit reach the top of that range.

Can I reach someone if my MagicPak quits at night?

Yes. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and our office and on-call staff answer right away. Call (616) 213-3060 any time.

Do you offer payment plans for a MagicPak replacement?

Yes. Ask us about payment plans for installations and repairs when you call (616) 213-3060 or request a free replacement estimate.

Should I repair an old MagicPak that runs on R-22?

A small electrical or ignition repair can still be worth it. A refrigerant leak or a failed compressor on an R-22 unit usually is not, since R-22 is out of production and the remaining supply is expensive.

Can a gas MagicPak be swapped for a heat pump?

In some condos it can. The answer depends on your electrical service and your association’s rules. MagicPak heat pump models carry electric backup heat for Michigan winters, and a technician can check whether your unit qualifies during a visit.

Will my condo board need to approve a replacement?

In many buildings, yes. A master deed and bylaws govern Michigan condominiums, and associations often control exterior louvers, equipment changes and contractor access to shared areas. Talk with your board before you book, and we can provide equipment specs for its review.

How do I know what size MagicPak my condo needs?

Units range from three-quarters of a ton to three tons of cooling. Square footage, windows, sun exposure and the size of the opening all matter, so a technician sizes the unit on site instead of copying the old label.

Does a new MagicPak fit the old wall opening?

Usually. MagicPak builds the V-Series to its original cabinet dimensions for replacement work. We measure the sleeve, louver and closet during the free estimate so the fit is confirmed before installation day.
