Air Quality

While your HVAC system has a filter to remove dust from your air, these filters exist to keep your unit functioning and aren’t powerful enough to really keep your air clean. This is where air purifiers can be installed to actively remove particles like viruses, pollen, pet dander, bacteria, mold, dust mites, and even gaseous pollutants from paint or polishes.

The REME-Halo® Whole Home In-Duct Air Purifier

One of the most powerful and effective purifiers we install is the REME-Halo®. With this purification system, pollutants don’t need to travel through the air handler for UV treatment or filtration. The REME-Halo is proactive and sends ionized aggressive oxidizers into the room to destroy the pollutants at the source before you can breathe them in.

  • Neutralizes 99.9% of the SARS-CoV-2 virus
  • Kills up to 99% of bacteria, mold, and viruses
  • Kills 99% of sneeze germs within 3 feet
  • New zinc ions kill 99% of viruses on surfaces
  • Dual ionizers reduce airborne particulates

The REME-Halo uses UV light to actively reduce bacteria, viruses, and allergens in the air and on surfaces. Learn more about how UV light works to powerfully purify your air.

Signs of Poor Air Quality

You should consider an air purifier, a filter with a higher MERV rating, or another air quality solution if you notice these signs:

If you notice these symptoms or you have asthma or allergies, air purification may be right for you. Blakeslee & Son installs air purification systems for homes in Rockford, Michigan and throughout West Michigan based on your unique needs. Get a quote.

How often should you change your furnace filter?

Your air filtration plays a role in your air quality. How often you should switch out your furnace filter depends on a few different factors, like your home’s air quality situation, the type of filter you’re using, number of pets in your home, and how often you use your furnace. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Filter Type: If you’re using standard fiberglass filters, check them monthly and replace them every 1-3 months. For pleated air filters, you can go longer (up to 3-6 months) between replacements but you should keep your eye on them monthly if you have pets, burn candles, or live in a dusty area.
  • Pet Owners or Allergy Sufferers: You may need to switch out your filters more frequently (around every 2-3 months).
  • Vacation Homes or Cottages: Where your home or furnace isn’t used as often, you can go much longer between changes, but you should still check your filter regularly.
  • High-Efficiency (MERV 13+) Filters: Sometimes these filters can last longer than standard, but should be monitored closely because they restrict airflow more than standard filters when they become dirty.

What is a MERV Rating on an air filter?

MERV stands for “Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value” and helps quantify the filter’s efficiency. MERV ratings are used to compare different filters. The higher the rating, the better the filter is at trapping smaller particles between .3 and 10 microns. These filters with higher MERV ratings are considered high-efficiency filters.

  • MERV 1-4: These are basic filters offering minimal filtration, mainly capturing large particles like dust mites, pollen, and carpet fibers.
  • MERV 5-8: These are great for residential settings and can capture smaller particles like mold spores and pet dander.
  • MERV 9-12: These are even better filters, capable of capturing even smaller particles like auto emissions and lead dust.
  • MERV 13-16: Filters within this range are considered high-efficiency. They can capture bacteria, tobacco smoke, and the smallest of particles. These filters are often used in superior residential settings, as well as in hospital settings.
  • MERV 17-20: These are the highest efficiency filters, used in cleanrooms and places where absolute purity of air is required. They can trap viruses and carbon dust.

Adding a Whole-Home Air Purifier to your HVAC System

Your heating and cooling systems have air filters built into them, which help remove dust and other contaminants from the air in your home. These filters are simply meant to help keep your HVAC functioning, but they aren’t powerful enough to keep your air clean. Whole-home air purifying systems work to clean the air you breathe so that it’s safe and free from things like pollen, pet dander, mildew, mold, and more.

Our central air cleaners treat your entire home by permanently capturing harmful contaminants like bacteria, mold spores, and allergens.
